Colombia‘s authorities seized more than 1,000 firearms and arrested nearly 800 people in a nationwide operation against arms trafficking.

After the operation, the National Police said, “The offensive combating illegal arms trafficking is on the right track.”

Over the course of 2011, almost 7,000 people have been arrested for crimes related to illegal firearms, and more than 15,000 weapons have been confiscated.

The 28 separate seizures over three days were concentrated in five cities, which include some of the most notorious areas in Colombia for gun crimes: Bogota, Cali, Medellin, Bucaramanga and Pereira.
