SUMMARY:Beyond El Mencho and the Chapitos: Mexico’s Next Generation of Organized Crime
DESCRIPTION:About the event\n\n\n\n\n\nEl Mencho is dead. The Sinaloa Cartel\, as we once knew it\, is gone. The Chapitos are cooperating with US authorities. \n\n\n\nMexico’s criminal landscape is entering a new phase — one defined by fragmented networks\, hyper-local armed cells\, and increasingly predatory criminal economies. \n\n\n\nFor more than 15 years\, InSight Crime has tracked these transformations from the ground up. In this donor-exclusive event\, our team will examine the rise of Mexico’s next generation of organized crime\, drawing on extensive fieldwork and lessons from elsewhere across Latin America to explore where the country’s underworld may be headed next. \n\n\n\nParticipants:\n\n\n\nSteven Dudley\, Deborah Bonello\, Parker Asmann\, Victoria Dittmar \n\n\n\n\n\nDonate to attend\n\n\n\n\nBecome a regular donor*\n\n\n\nMake a one-time donation**\n\n\n\n\n*As a regular donor\, you will have access to this event and all future events during your active subscription period. **A one-time donation gives you access to this event only. \n\n\n\nWhen: June 26th\, 202611:00 a.m. (Eastern Time) \n\n\n\nLanguage: English \n\n\n\nWhere: Zoom meeting \n\n\n\nA link to access the event will be sent one hour before\, to the email registered. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nMake an annual contribution and access all our donor-exclusive events.\n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bronze \n \n \n \n \n $50 per year \n \n \n \n Select \n \n – Exclusive events – One meeting directors and/or experts \n \n\n \n \n \n Silver \n \n \n \n \n $500 per year \n \n \n \n Select \n \n – Exclusive events – One meeting with the directors and/or experts (individual) \n \n\n \n \n \n Gold Corporate \n \n up to four users \n \n \n \n \n $800 per year \n \n \n \n Select \n \n – Exclusive events– One meeting with the directors and/or experts (group up to four) \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n\n\nMake a one-time donation\n\n\n\nBetween June 1\, 2026\, and June 25\, 2026\, your one-time donation of $15 or more will grant you access to this event. \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n One-time \n \n \n Donation amount \n \n \n $ \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n Donate now

SUMMARY:Cocaine and Venezuela's Cartel of the Suns\, Without Maduro
DESCRIPTION:About the event\n\n\n\nFor years\, Nicolás Maduro built a system in which illicit revenues\, from cocaine trafficking to illicit gold\, flowed into the pockets of corrupt officials loyal to the Bolivarian Revolution\, working in obscure\, loose networks known as the Cartel of the Suns (Cartel de los Soles). But now Maduro and his wife\, Cilia Flores\, are imprisoned in the United States\, and a new president has taken power in Caracas — under Washington’s close watch. \n\n\n\nMeanwhile\, the so-called Cartel of the Suns remains designated a terrorist organization by the United States; the names of officials still serving in the Venezuelan government appear in multiple court cases in the United States\, including Diosdado Cabello; and organized crime groups continue their operations\, especially the Colombian‑Venezuelan guerrilla group the National Liberation Army (Ejército de Liberación Nacional – ELN)\, a key player in the cocaine supply chain into Venezuela. \n\n\n\nWhat do the actions of the new Chavista administration tell us about the future of organized crime in Venezuela? In this donor-exclusive event\, InSight Crime experts with decades of experience analyzing the country will shed light on the possible future of the Cartel of the Suns and the influence of organized crime within the Venezuelan government. \n\n\n\nParticipants will have the opportunity to hear from our experts and ask questions. The event will be held in English. \n\n\n\nInformation to access will be sent to the email used for the donation. \n\n\n\n*As an annual donor you will have access to this event and all future events during your active subscription period. **A one-time donation of as little as $15 or more between February 5 to February 27\, 2026 provides you with access to this event only. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nDonate to attend\n\n\n\n\nBecome an annual donor*\n\n\n\nMake a one-time donation**\n\n\n\n\nWhen: February 27\, 2026\, at 11:00 a.m. (Eastern time\, UTC-5) \n\n\n\nLanguage: English – with Zoom subtitles available in your preferred language \n\n\n\nWhere: Zoom \n\n\n\nAccess instructions will be sent to the email used for the donation. \n\n\n\nRead the investigation\n\n\n	\n \n \n	\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n *Summer InSights 2026 Welcome to Summer InSights\, our seasonal deep dive into the stories shaping Latin America’s underworld. This year\, we are exploring four… \n \n Keep reading \n \n 15 Jul 202620 Aug 2026 \n \n	\n\n \n \n	\n	\n\n\n\n\nMake an annual contribution and access all our donor-exclusive events.\n\n\n\nIf you prefer to donate to attend only this event\, make a one-time donation of $15 or more below \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n Bronze \n \n \n \n \n $50 per year \n \n \n \n Select \n \n – Exclusive events – One meeting directors and/or experts \n \n\n \n \n \n Silver \n \n \n \n \n $500 per year \n \n \n \n Select \n \n – Exclusive events – One meeting with the directors and/or experts (individual) \n \n\n \n \n \n Gold Corporate \n \n up to four users \n \n \n \n \n $800 per year \n \n \n \n Select \n \n – Exclusive events – One meeting with the directors and/or experts (group up to four) \n \n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n\n \n\n\nMake a one-time donation\n\n\n\nBetween February 5\, 2026\, and February 27\, 2026\, your one-time donation of $15 or more will grant you access to this event. \n\n\n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n \n One-time \n \n \n Donation amount \n \n \n $ \n \n \n \n \n\n \n \n \n \n\n \n Donate now

In Colombia it is an insurgent force\, in Venezuela\, a pro-regime paramilitary one. Even as the ELN sat down for talks with the Petro administration\, it was conducting operations to take control of the entire 2200 km border and use it to project itself deeper into Colombia. The ELN today is the most powerful it has ever been\, thanks to support from the Maduro regime. No group ever signs a peace agreement while it is growing in strength and sees better opportunities on the battlefield than at the negotiating table. \n\n\n\nExperts: \n\n\n\n\nJeremy McDermott\, InSight Crime\n\n\n\nGustavo Duncan\, Valor Público | EAFIT University\n\n\n\nIsabel Gutiérrez\, Valor Público | EAFIT University\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n \n\n\n\nOpen In-person and Virtual Panel\n\n\n\n\nConfirm your participation\n\n\n\n\nWhen: December 9\, 2025 9:30 a.m. – 11:00 a.m. (UTC-5) \n\n\n\nLanguage: Spanish \n\n\n\nWhere: Universidad EAFIT Visitor’s Center \n\n\n\nLive Broadcast in Spanish: \n\n\n\nYouTube

DESCRIPTION:About the event\n\n\n\nOver the last five years\, Ecuador has been engulfed in brutal violence and a criminal chaos unprecedented in its history as the country has unraveled at a dizzying speed. The roots of this security crisis can be traced directly to the country’s prison system\, where infamous criminal networks such as the Choneros and the Lobos have evolved in a vacuum left by an absent state. \n\n\n\nTo accompany the launch of our new investigation\, “Behind Bars\, Beyond Control: The Fall of Ecuador’s Prisons and the Rise of Its Mafias\,” InSight Crime is holding a virtual event on December 4. SUMMARY:From security operations to political crackdowns: Covering human rights in Venezuela
DESCRIPTION:About the event\n\n\n\nInSight Crimes’ Camila Aristizábal will host a discussion with Defiende Venezuela’s Ezequiel Monsalve on one of the most pressing regional issues of the day – documenting and covering human rights abuses perpetrated by the increasingly authoritarian Venezuelan state. Defiende Venezuela and InSight Crime recently partnered on a unique collaboration turning abuses documented by Defiende Venezuela during the course of the security forces “mega-operation” Operation Trueno into a series of graphic stories. Since then\, the brutal post-election crackdown on political dissent by the regime of President Nicolas Maduro has brought international attention to the issues highlighted in the investigation\, and to the increasingly dangerous but critical work of Venezuelan human rights defenders. \n\n\n\nThe discussion will be conducted in Spanish and will be livestreamed on X. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on X\n\n\n\n\nLive event in Spanish. SUMMARY:Durán: A Window into Ecuador’s Organized Crime Explosion -- Virtual Panel
DESCRIPTION:About the event\n\n\n\nOnce a bustling commercial hub\, Durán has become ground zero for Ecuador’s alarming surge in criminal violence. With a record-breaking homicide rate of 147 per 100\,000 in 2023\, this coastal city exemplifies Ecuador’s rapid descent into criminal chaos. But what’s driving this transformation\, and are government efforts to reverse these trends working? \n\n\n\nTo accompany the release of our investigation “Durán: A Window into Ecuador’s Organized Crime Explosion\,” InSight Crime will host a virtual event on September 26th. Join us to explore how systemic corruption\, chronic neglect\, and the rise of criminal gangs  have reshaped Durán’s landscape. We’ll delve into the city’s critical role in cocaine trafficking\, the impact of land trafficking on its criminal ecosystem\, and the complex relationships between gangs and local communities. We’ll also explore two important case studies – one of a criminal broker and another of a long-time gang leader – that reveal how Durán’s (and Ecuador’s) criminal landscape has evolved in the last decade.  \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nJoin us on YouTube\n\n\n\nJoin us on X\n\n\n\n\nLive event in Spanish. SUMMARY:The Day After: The Presidential Election and Criminal Chessboard in Venezuela - Virtual Panel
DESCRIPTION:About the event\n\n\n\nFor more than a decade\, Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro has used his alliances with criminal groups to increase his control and consolidate his power. Venezuela’s electoral authority declared Maduro the winner of the presidential elections this Sunday\, July 28\, beating out Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia\, who is backed by popular opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. The opposition has contested the results\, decrying fraud. This raises a number of questions for the day after the vote. \n\n\n\nIf Maduro is challenged\, how will organized crime in the country be affected? What security challenges await a new Venezuelan administration? How will regional security be impacted by Sunday’s results? \n\n\n\nWe invite you to join a virtual panel where InSight Crime co-director Jeremy McDermott\, accompanied by political scientist Paola Bautista de Alemán\, political consultant Oswaldo Ramírez\, and journalist Sebastiana Barráez\, will discuss these and other questions about the future of Venezuela’s criminal landscape. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nConnect to the YouTube broadcast\n\n\n\nConnect to the X broadcast\n\n\n\n\nLive event in Spanish.
