Behind Closed Doors With InSight Crime 2026

September 29 @ 8:00 am October 2 @ 1:00 pm

One pass. Three events.
A closer look at the work behind organized crime stories.

During the week, our experts will take you beyond the headlines to examine the criminal economies, networks, and dynamics shaping some of the most important security challenges in Latin America and beyond and take you behind the curtain to show some of our investigative processes and techniques.

This is your opportunity to interact with our experts, ask questions and learn how InSight Crime approaches the investigation of organized crime.

Explore the events and experts below.

The Events

What does the fentanyl trade look like from inside the criminal economy?

The fentanyl market is constantly evolving, and so are criminal networks.
Join InSight Crime Co-Director Steven Dudley, investigator Victoria Dittmar, and drug policy expert Juan Carlos GarzĂłn for an inside look at how criminal networks are responding to shifting synthetic drug markets, whether the fentanyl trade has reached a new equilibrium, and what these changes mean for public health and law enforcement.

In this edition, InSight Crime co-director Jeremy McDermott and Managing Editor Deborah Bonello will unpack Venezuela’s evolving criminal landscape and how it is being shaped by the removal of the architect of Venezuela’s criminal-hybrid state, Nicolás Maduro. Bring your questions and join the conversation.

How to Collect, Process, Analyse and Visualize Data When Covering Organized Crime

In InSight Crime’s Masterclass, investigators from our Data Unit will take you through everything you need to know about making the most of data in organized crime investigations. Juliana ManjarrĂ©s and Christopher Newton  will walk you through getting primary data from Freedom of Information requests around the region, using OCR to work with poorly scanned PDFs, accessing APIs, and scraping websites to get analyzable data. We will show you how we glean insights from this information while avoiding common pitfalls. After the technical presentation, we will answer any questions on how you can apply these tools and practices in your field.

Access all three events of the week, plus exclusive summaries and a PDF featuring key findings, reports, and a decade of InSight Crime research on synthetic drugs across Latin America and the Caribbean.
