For more than a decade, Venezuela’s President Nicolás Maduro has used his alliances with criminal groups to increase his control and consolidate his power. Venezuela’s electoral authority declared Maduro the winner of the presidential elections this Sunday, July 28, beating out Edmundo Gonzalez Urrutia, who is backed by popular opposition leader Maria Corina Machado. The opposition has contested the results, decrying fraud. This raises a number of questions for the day after the vote.

If Maduro is challenged, how will organized crime in the country be affected? What security challenges await a new Venezuelan administration? How will regional security be impacted by Sunday’s results?
