San Pedro Sula is Honduras’s second most populous urban center, and also deals with many of the same problems as the capital, Tegucigalpa, when it comes to street gangs, violence and extortion. Powerful street gangs like the Barrio 18 and Mara Salvatrucha (MS13) control entire neighborhoods within the city, and rely on extortion as one of their key criminal economies.

InSight Crime has created an interactive map of the city, highlighting some of the most notorious neighborhoods with a street gang presence. The interactive map is also supplemented by a static map below.

*This investigation into extortion in the Northern Triangle was carried out as part of a joint project with the Global Initiative.
