Gang Presence in Tegucigalpa

BARRIO 18 / LATEST UPDATE EN

Extortion in Honduras is both systematic and violent. The country is believed to pay out about $200 million yearly in extortion. Tegucigalpa, the country’s largest city and capital, is overrun by street gangs —  the most feared extortionists in the region.

This interactive map seeks to take the reader through a tour of some of the most gang-ridden neighborhoods of Tegucigalpa. The interactive map is also supplemented by a static map below.

*This investigation into extortion in the Northern Triangle was carried out as part of a joint project with the Global Initiative.
