Series on Plunder of Peru’s Amazon Makes Headlines

10 JUN 2022 BY INSIGHT CRIME EN

Since launching on June 2, InSight Crime’s six-part series on environmental crime in Peru’s Amazon has been well-received. Detailing the shocking impunity enjoyed by those plundering the rainforest, the investigation was featured by the Associated Press, with this coverage published in the Washington PostSan Francisco Chronicle and The Hill

Given obvious echoes in Brazil’s struggles in the Amazon, Brazilian media also covered our report, including national daily Estadão, as well as UOL Notícias,

“Around 28 percent of Peru’s gold production is illegal, according to the InSight Crime investigation, which also estimates that most timber extraction is done without permits.” - Associated Press

Our coverage of the death of Colombian guerrilla leader, alias ‘Gentil Duarte,’ also continued to generate interest with InSight Crime Co-director, Jeremy McDermott, speaking with El Pitazo about the potential involvement of Colombian intelligence in his death.
