Behind Bars, Beyond Control: The Fall of Ecuador’s Prisons and the Rise of Its Mafias — Virtual Panel
December 4, 2024 @ 11:00 am – 12:30 pm (Quito)

About the event
Over the last five years, Ecuador has been engulfed in brutal violence and a criminal chaos unprecedented in its history as the country has unraveled at a dizzying speed. The roots of this security crisis can be traced directly to the country’s prison system, where infamous criminal networks such as the Choneros and the Lobos have evolved in a vacuum left by an absent state.
To accompany the launch of our new investigation, “Behind Bars, Beyond Control: The Fall of Ecuador’s Prisons and the Rise of Its Mafias,” InSight Crime is holding a virtual event on December 4. Join us and our panel of experts as we discuss the failed policies, systemic corruption, and criminal dynamics that have shaped one what has become one of the biggest security challenges facing the region today.
