From security operations to political crackdowns: Covering human rights in Venezuela

October 17, 2024 @ 4:00 pm 5:00 pm Bogotá / 5:00 pm Caracas

About the event

InSight Crimes’ Camila Aristizábal will host a discussion with Defiende Venezuela’s Ezequiel Monsalve on one of the most pressing regional issues of the day – documenting and covering human rights abuses perpetrated by the increasingly authoritarian Venezuelan state. Defiende Venezuela and InSight Crime recently partnered on a unique collaboration turning abuses documented by Defiende Venezuela during the course of the security forces “mega-operation” Operation Trueno into a series of graphic stories. Since then, the brutal post-election crackdown on political dissent by the regime of President Nicolas Maduro has brought international attention to the issues highlighted in the investigation, and to the increasingly dangerous but critical work of Venezuelan human rights defenders.

The discussion will be conducted in Spanish and will be livestreamed on X.

Explore our recent series of graphic stories on Operation Trueno, when security forces were deployed to take down Tren del Llano but instead abused, tortured, robbed, extorted, and falsely imprisoned ordinary families.
