About the event
The ELN has become a Colombo-Venezuelan group and has expanded its territory and strength on both sides of the frontier. In Colombia it is an insurgent force, in Venezuela, a pro-regime paramilitary one. Even as the ELN sat down for talks with the Petro administration, it was conducting operations to take control of the entire 2200 km border and use it to project itself deeper into Colombia. The ELN today is the most powerful it has ever been, thanks to support from the Maduro regime. No group ever signs a peace agreement while it is growing in strength and sees better opportunities on the battlefield than at the negotiating table.
