The Women Ensnared in Tren de Aragua’s Criminal Web in Peru

Carmen, Fernanda, Katherine, Lucia, Liliana, Marcela, Paulina, and Roxi* have lived in constant fear since 2019 — fear of being extorted, assaulted, murdered, or disappeared by Tren de Aragua, the Venezuelan mega-gang that has spread across South America. These women serve as an accidental criminal barometer for the city, showing the early impacts of the predatory criminal economies that have fueled Tren de Aragua’s expansion in Lima.

Among the many dangers lurking on the streets of Peru, we uncover the story of Isabel, a survivor of human trafficking for sexual exploitation. Her experience mirrors that of dozens of women ensnared in the Gallegos network, a faction of Tren de Aragua that operates a vast web of exploitation.
